Understanding the Carat System
Carat measures how much pure gold is present in a piece, out of 24 parts. 24 carat is pure gold — soft, richly coloured, and rarely used in everyday jewellery because it marks and bends easily. To make gold durable enough to wear, it’s alloyed with other metals such as copper, silver or zinc, which is where the more familiar carats come from.
In South Africa, the carats you’ll most commonly encounter are 9, 14, 18, 22 and 24 carat. As a general rule, the higher the carat, the higher the pure gold content and the richer the colour, but also the softer and more prone to scratching the piece will be. Lower carats trade some of that richness for strength, making them better suited to rings and bracelets worn daily.
Why Carat Isn’t the Full Picture
Here’s where many people are surprised: carat alone doesn’t determine what a piece of jewellery is worth. Two rings of identical carat can differ enormously in value depending on their craftsmanship, any diamonds or gemstones set into them, the maker or brand, the piece’s age, and its collectability in today’s market.
