Deciding to sell pre-loved jewellery is rarely only a financial decision. Whether it’s an inherited ring or something no longer worn, parting with it deserves care. A little preparation goes a long way towards a valuation that is accurate, transparent and stress-free. Here is how to arrive ready.

THE DO’S AND DON’TS

Gather everything that came with the piece.

Original boxes, receipts, insurance valuations and diamond grading reports all help build an accurate picture. Documentation isn’t essential, we assess pieces with no paperwork every day, but where it exists, it strengthens the valuation.

Resist the urge to “fix” or over-clean.

A gentle wipe with a soft cloth is all that’s needed. Avoid harsh cleaning, re-polishing or DIY repairs beforehand, original condition tells us a great deal. Leave cleaning and restoration to us.

Note what you know, and don’t worry about what you don’t.

If your piece carries a hallmark, karat stamp or maker’s mark, point it out. If not, that’s fine, identifying purity, weight and origin is exactly what an accredited valuer is for.

Understand how value is worked out.

Gold is assessed on its purity and content, separately from stones or settings. Diamonds and gemstones are judged on their own merits, and antique or designer craftsmanship can add value. This helps separate sentimental worth from market worth, two very different things.

Bring your identification.

Reputable buyers are required to verify identity, so a valid ID or passport keeps things quick and secure, and signals you’re dealing with a legitimate, accredited business.

Come with questions, not pressure.

A valuation is information, not a commitment. Ask how we reached a figure, take time to think, or simply gain clarity and keep the piece. Many clients do exactly that.

It also helps to know what to expect: a proper appraisal is unhurried, your gold is tested and weighed, stones examined separately, and everything explained as we go. Nothing happens without your agreement.

Choosing where to go matters most of all.

At Gold & Finance every item is individually assessed by experienced jewellery buyers who consider far more than its precious metal content. We evaluate the craftsmanship, design, diamonds, coloured gemstones, maker, brand, age, collectability, historical significance and current market demand to determine its true value.

This comprehensive approach means your jewellery may be worth significantly more than its gold value alone.

Whether you own a modern engagement ring, a luxury watch, an antique heirloom, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Retro or Mid-Century jewellery, our experienced team understands that every piece has its own story and its own value.
