It is a question more people are asking. The diamond market has shifted considerably over the past decade, new competitors have entered the space, consumer preferences have evolved, and there is more noise than ever around what a diamond is actually worth. So, are diamonds still worth money? The answer is yes, but understanding that value requires a little context.
Natural Diamonds Retain Real Value
The first and most important distinction is between natural and laboratory-grown diamonds. Natural diamonds, formed over billions of years beneath the earth’s surface, remain genuinely valuable. They are finite, they are rare, and that scarcity underpins their worth in a way that no manufactured product can replicate.
Laboratory-grown diamonds have flooded the market in recent years. They are chemically identical to natural stones, but they are produced at scale, and their prices have dropped sharply as supply has increased. If you have a natural diamond, that is a very different asset to a lab-grown stone, and it is valued accordingly.
What Determines a Diamond’s Value?
Professional diamond valuation is based on four internationally recognised criteria, known as the Four Cs. Understanding them helps you understand what you have.
- Cut – How well the diamond reflects light
- Colour – The absence of colour (the less colour, the higher the value)
- Clarity – The presence of internal or external imperfections
- Carat Weight – The size of the diamond
Together, these four factors determine where your diamond sits in the market, and what a professional buyer will offer for it.
The Resale Reality
Here is something worth knowing before you sell: diamonds rarely resell at the price paid in a retail setting. Retail jewellery pricing includes significant markups, for craftsmanship, brand, and retail overheads, that do not carry over when a stone is resold. This is not a flaw in the diamond; it is simply how the market works, and it applies to most luxury goods.
What you can expect from a professional buyer is a fair offer based on the diamond’s actual characteristics and current market demand. The gap between retail and resale varies considerably depending on the stone’s quality, size, and provenance.
What About Certification?
A GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certificate provides an independent, internationally recognised assessment of your diamond’s Four Cs. If your diamond is certified, it gives a buyer confidence and can support a stronger offer.
If you do not have certification, a professional buyer will assess the stone directly, which is perfectly standard practice.
Getting a Fair Assessment
Gold & Finance has been buying diamonds across South Africa since 1992. As GIA-accredited diamond buyers with branches in Cape Town, Sandton, and Durban, the team assesses every stone individually, transparently, professionally, and with no obligation to sell.
Whether you have a single loose diamond, a diamond ring, or a piece of diamond jewellery you no longer wear, a professional assessment costs you nothing and tells you exactly what you have.
